A while ago, one of my students messaged me a few hours before his lesson to tell me he wanted to record it.<\/p>\n
His parents had made a decision: no music until his grades improved. No lessons, no orchestra, no double bass. That was going to be his last class for an indefinite time.
I spent the whole morning thinking about what to give him in one hour. I had never felt so frustrated and sad, and at the same time so determined to be there for someone. Putting myself in his place brought up too many emotions.<\/p>\n
I didn’t want to overwhelm him with information. I decided to give him time to simply enjoy \u2014 we finished his piece and he played it like it was a recital. At the end, I left him a summary of everything he had achieved musically during our time together. In one year he had already learned to play with confidence and joined a youth orchestra. That way he would have not just a guide to find his way back, but the motivation of knowing he’d be remembering something he already knew \u2014 not learning it for the first time. It’s different.<\/p>\n
That afternoon I kept thinking: why don’t I have something like this for everyone? And yes, thumb position too! I find it kind of funny how much collective fear there is around this position \u2014 and I’ll be very honest with you: everything is actually much easier up there. In fact, modern double bass teaching methods are starting to focus on beginning there. But I don’t want to bore you with details.<\/p>\n
