About Course

Every time I arrive at a new institution and meet the students, the same thing happens.

I find someone who has been playing for six months, eight months, almost a year — and still hasn’t touched a single piece. Not one. Just method book exercises, isolated scales, positions that “need to be mastered before moving on.”

I can’t believe it. I really can’t.

Where I come from, the philosophy is completely different. In El Sistema de Venezuela — where I grew up as a musician — from week one you’re already playing. Even if it’s a short piece, an arrangement, open strings only. It doesn’t matter. You’re making music. You’re in an ensemble. You’re falling in love with the instrument before anyone gets the chance to tell you it’s hard. Because you can do this — you just need the right guide and to start playing from day one.

Because technique is learned by playing — not by waiting until you’re ready to play.

That’s the reason this course exists. A clear guide to start from scratch and make music in weeks, not years:

  • The names of the parts of the instrument.
  • How to take care of it.
  • How to position it on your body in a natural and comfortable way, finding your ideal technique — because technique should adapt to you, not the other way around.
  • Your first scales.
  • Your first pieces with piano accompaniment.

If you’re starting from scratch with the double bass and want a practical guide to start playing in record time, this course is for you. Regardless of your age or whether you have any prior knowledge. You come in from zero and leave playing your first scales and pieces with piano accompaniment.

I’ll be with you every step of the way — we’ll have an open chat channel where I’ll be answering your questions throughout the course. See you in the virtual classroom.

Course Content

Level 1 – First Encounter with the Instrument
Before you start playing, it’s important to really get to know the double bass. In this level, you will discover how the instrument is built, the name of each part, how to take care of it, and how to adapt it to your body. In other words, you’ll learn to find a natural position so you can practice comfortably, safely, and without tension.

  • Module 1 – Discovering Every Detail
    04:27
  • Module 2 – Posture and Endpin Height
    02:47
  • Module 3 – Let’s Talk About the Strings
    03:26

Level 2 – Let’s Start the Adventure with the Bow
This level is all about the double bass bow: I’ll guide you on how to hold it, use it without tension, and get a clear sound from the start. You’ll learn to coordinate your movements, cross from one string to another smoothly, and read slurs naturally. Everything step by step, with no rush, and with exercises designed for each stage.

Level 3 – First Steps on the Fingerboard
In this level, we begin using the left hand on the fingerboard. You’ll learn how the fingers are numbered, how to place them, and how to recognize the notes on each string. We’ll also work on your first scales and explore how to shift between positions with confidence. This is the beginning of your melodic journey.

Level 4 – Let’s Make Some Music! Your First Complete Pieces
This is a very special moment: in this level, you’ll play your first two pieces. Everything you’ve learned so far comes to life through music. We’ll study them step by step, and at the end you’ll have a piano backing track to play along with, helping you practice intonation, rhythm, and musical listening.

Here you’ll find all the available resources: sheet music and piano accompaniments at different speeds. Try to practice at least 30 minutes a day with the piano tracks. This way you’ll build a sustainable routine and develop consistency in your double bass practice.
